Year 1 Spring 2018


We are consolidating our Phonics skills in our Reading and Writing.

Building up our fluency in Reading.

To read a wide range of books and explore the language they come across.

To correctly use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in their writing.

Writing two or more related sentences about a subject.

To understand when question and exclamation marks are used and begin to use them correctly in their writing.  

Applying their skills across the curriculum.


We are consolidating our numbers from 0-50 and beyond.

Chant counting in 2, 5 and 10.

Writing the number names as words from zero to twenty.

Becoming confident at identifying the place value of a digit within a number.

Consolidating and applying our knowledge of Addition and Subtraction; including ‘missing number’ calculations.

Becoming familiar with ‘O’clock’ and ‘half past’ times.

Becoming familiar with the fractions ½ and ¼.

Consolidating our knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes.

Beginning to understand strategies for Multiplication and Division.


In Spring 1 we explored The Arctic and In Spring 2 we explored Dinosaurs’.

We have learnt all about the different environments and the conditions in the Arctic as well as the animals that live there.

We discovered different types of dinosaurs and learnt some facts about them.


We looked at ‘Animals including Humans’ – where we looked at different groups of animals, noting their similarities and differences. We learnt the meaning for ‘Herbivores’ ‘Carnivores’ and ‘Omnivores’.

We also enjoyed investigating different aspects of Science during Science week.
